電影中展現1930年代印度教對待寡婦的不公平教義，在傳統的印度教中，女人只是男人的附屬品，當丈夫死去，妻子只有三種選擇：與丈夫一起火化、改嫁給丈夫的兄弟、或是進入寡婦之家守貞。但直到今日，印度對於寡婦的不合理約束依舊存在，尤其在鄉間。
